Each day is a new day. Do not give up! Do not settle. Searching for a job and/or figuring out what to do in life is a difficult process. However, realize that it is a process and a journey so it may take some time.
In the meanwhile, here are a couple of quick tips that will help you be more successful:
Exercise. I know…you hear it over and over again but searching for a job can be an extremely emotional process. You need to be physically and emotionally strong. You have to be persistent as you will often hear, “we’ve selected another candidate who was a better match” or nothing at all before you land a new position. Yes, I said “NEW” because nothing lasts forever. It may feel like forever but ultimately something will change so create some healthy habits in the meanwhile. Think about what type of exercise you can easily incorporate into your life and start doing it little by little. Walking around the block is a great start. Then step it up and walk around several blocks. Just get moving – it is important to maintain a strong mind/body connection and exercise will help tremendously. I often check in with my clients to see if they are exercising since it is so important.
Daily Check-in. Remember that every day is a new day with possibilities. Start the moment your feet hit the ground by saying a prayer or simply expressing gratitude. By expressing gratitude you take the focus off of yourself and how frustrating things might be and create a broader perspective and fresh, new attitude for the day. Trust the universe. Lao Tzu states that “when I let go of what I am…I become what I might be”. Keep striving to let go of preconceived notions of what you think your career and life should have been and accept the new day.
Maintain Social Contacts. Now that you probably have more flexibility in your schedule it’s a great time to develop different ways to maintain connections. Get involved in your community. Doing volunteer work will immediately put things into perspective for you while not obligating you to devoting too much structured time. Think about what you are interested in and do it! Or perhaps you always wanted to learn how to do stained glass. Now is it a great time to tap your creativity. You don’t have to be good…just have fun! Check your local city or county area for classes or ways you can get involved. Also, be sure to accept social invitations as it is important to stay connected to others.
Give yourself a break. Be kind to yourself. Do not force yourself to constantly search for opportunities. Take time to relax. Read a new book, go to a movie or take a long drive. You may feel pressured to constantly be tweaking your resume or networking but you will do better if you give yourself permission to have some downtime. Quiet time is extremely important! Practice mindfulness where you try to focus on staying in the moment and really absorbing the beauty and wonder of the world around you regardless of your situation.
