Life is all about perspective. Over 68% of workers are disengaged and unfulfilled in their jobs. That is a sad statistic since we spend most of our waking hours at work ! I don't know about you but when I need an "attitude adjustment" all I have to do is take a walk in the woods and suddenly my view of whatever situation I was dealing with looks completely different. What do you view in the photo below? Do you simply see the woods or can you see the beautiful bear to the left of the tree lumbering up the hill? To gain real perspective you need to slow down, stay in the moment, look around and reflect within.
When I am working with clients who are confused and anxious I often ask them what they do to relax. Frequently the response is that they do not feel like they have time to relax. Really? Now we don't have "time" to relax! I have a lot of concern about the pace that many of us are living our lives. As an ambitious person myself, I understand the excitement and urgency to work. At the same time, it seems like the pace of life is consuming us. As a counselor, I spend a lot of time examining why people do what they do. What strikes me is that we are such an instant society that too many of us are just going through the motions in life. Many people have not really given themselves the luxury to explore their interests and delve into how they might be able to improve their life! I recently posted a link to a terrific movie on my website and several people mentioned that they do not have two hours to watch a movie...even a really good one!
It is important to give yourself the gift of time. Reflect for a moment upon what makes you excited? Is there a cause or something that you have curiosity about? If you could do anything or be anything what would it be? Once you figure it out then go with that....move towards that interest. Explore it, cultivate that desire and see where it takes you. Maybe it will be something that you do on the side or on a part-time basis but try to incorporate that into your life somehow.

Have you ever been on a work retreat? Where do most retreats take place? Right, in nature. Out in the middle of the woods or on top of a mountain. It's important to take your own mini retreats in life. You deserve the time to take a walk in the park or hike to the top of the mountain. Give yourself permission to do so. Eat your breakfast outside in the morning. Walk through the park during lunch or simply drive a different way to work and really observe the new view. The point is that you need time and perspective to revive your soul. Every day you are given a new opportunity to change your world!
