What is a Career Coach?
We all get frustrated in our careers and need some help from time to time. We need somebody who can encourage and inspire us. A career coach is an unbiased, compassionate professional eager to listen and help us sort through life choices. A career coach is a trained counselor with knowledge about the world of work, human resources and job search strategies so they bring some additional knowledge and value to your search.
The Relationship
In a coaching relationship, there’s the investment by both you and the coach. With the two of you invested in this relationship, it’s in both of your interests to make it work and make the experience as useful as possible. When you engage with a coach is an intimate one-on-one relationship. The coach learns personal things about you which allows for the approach to best meet your needs.
Safe Space
Good coaches provide a wonderful space for their clients. The coaching environment should be a safe space for you. There’s even a coaching term for it...coaches “hold space” for their clients. Time passes quickly as true topics will surface for discussion.
Professional Counseling
With your coach, you are in the professional hands of somebody who has your best interest at heart. The goal is to help you learn more about yourself so you can find your authentic self and match it to the world of work and opportunities.
The Focus is on YOU
In a coaching relationship, the focus is all on you and your needs and intentions. A coach will want to know what’s on your mind and what you would like to deal with in each session. Once you’ve unpacked what it is you’re bringing to the session, the coach can get you to identify how you want to feel by the end of it. They will want to know how they can be best used by you.
Teaching YOU how to “FISH”
It is important that the coaching is set up in a way that it is useful for you. Negotiating the boundaries and terms of your contract with the coach from the start will ensure this and is also a skill worth learning in itself.
A Safe Place to Talk
The coaching environment is a great place to discuss topics that you worry about. Any challenges that are dealing with can be honestly discussed with your coach.
Help you focus on what is important
A good coach will help you take responsibility for your intended actions and hold you accountable to your plans. Once you’ve done the thinking for yourself, the coach will support you to help you obtain your career or life goal.
Setting a good example
As you spend time with your coach, you’ll pick up on the coaching skills they use in their sessions with you and start to use them in your own life. This will have a positive impact on things such as how you listen and how you ask questions.
Somebody to really listen to you
Good coaches are present in the moment and great listeners. The session should be all about you and your goals and needs.
Guiding and illuminating the way
A good coach knows they only have to guide clients; they don’t need to control them. The coach will question the client, listen to them and help generate solutions so clients can reach their life goals!
