What does it take to be a successful entrepreneur? Do you know that they actually have tests designed to help determine if you would be successful? Really? How does one define success? We all define it differently. Much less how do we measure it?
The best thing about experience is that it means you have tried different opportunities and learned from each of them. You get better at developing a vision, managing your time, evaluating what works and doesn’t work and figuring out what is really important. So, I do not think there is a test that can determine if one will be successful in running a small business.
What I do believe is that every position has advantages and disadvantages. I believe that we all have to determine what is really important to us and what kind of lifestyle we want. It actually comes down to values. Do you value the autonomy and independence that being an entrepreneur allows? Is creativity at the top of your list? Like anything in life, you have to really want something enough to make it happen. It all depends on you!
As a Career Coach, I have helped people evaluate their values for years now. I am always amazed at how people will not go after what they really want. It is almost like selecting the opposite of what they want is the safer option. I understand that we all have circumstances and responsibilities, but do you want to use the bulk of your time here on earth doing something that is not meaningful to you?
I suppose many have not had the opportunity of experiencing a position that is fulfilling to them. It makes me very sad to realize how many people just go through the motions to just get a paycheck. Again, I do not want to project my own values on you but I do want you to understand that work can be fulfilling. There are many people who search for and create a life of meaning.
In this ever changing world of work you have many opportunities to go a new direction. Sure, it is scary but perhaps not as terrifying as living an empty life. Interested in making a change? Let us know if you need some help and support. Carpe Diem!
