As a Career Counselor, I am fortunate to get the gift of watching people explore, grow and become It is so wonderful to be able to help guide somebody in the process of self-discovery and exploration! their authentic self.
The “goodness of fit” occurs when an individual has finally figured out their authentic self and has matched their personality, interests, passions and skills with how it best fits into the world of work. We are our “best self” and producing our best work when this congruence occurs.
In one of my recent roles at JMU, I had the opportunity to meet the most wonderful student. At an early age he had challenges as a result of numerous blows to his head from sports and resulting concussions. It was a life threatening brain injury that James had to continue to overcome due to having some difficulty with learning and retention. It was quite an achievement already to have just gotten accepted into a wonderful institution like James Madison University. However, just getting into a great college was just the start for James.
I served as both James Orrigo's Career Counselor and Academic Advisor. What a privilege that turned out to be. As first glimpse, James could have been like any other JMU student. He was smart, hardworking and honest. He quickly got assimilated to the JMU way and learned that life is about more than just him. He became involved in numerous student organizations and quickly made lots of friends. On any given day, James could be found on campus using his therapy of playing his guitar and writing songs to help cope with the challenges that college creates. After exploring lots of career options and majors, James found his niche in life. However, another challenge that James had to overcome was the loss of his dear mother. After a hard fought battle with cancer, she died at an early age and never got to totally see what a successful and motivational person James had become.
Despite all his difficulty, James Orrigo is now a well known inspirational and motivational speaker! He has traveled nationwide to over hundreds of places to serve as a Keynote Speaker at leadership conferences. He has assisted non-profit organizations in their efforts and has become quite the fundraiser for important causes. He has learned early in his life that his gift is also his passion and has truly become his authentic self.
