"If things start happening, don't worry, don't stew, just go right along and you'll start happening too”…Wonderful words to live by…Unfortunately, they are not my words but that of the great Theodor Seuss Geisel, otherwise known to most of us as Dr. Seuss. Many of us grew up reading his wonderful rhymes in childhood books such as, Green Eggs and Ham, but few realized that he was actually a career coach! At least, I would consider him as such.
On my way home from my counseling group last night, I was thinking about the best ways to help my clients get to the next step. Some need individual sessions and are ready to “take action” while others still need to look inward and continue to process. What would Dr. Seuss recommend? For the ones ready to take action he might say “you have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose." Or perhaps he would say "today is your day…your mountain is waiting. So ... get on your way."
Career counselors help clients in a variety of ways. Career development is a process with stages. Some people are at the beginning and are doing self-assessment and exploration. They often are experiencing a lot of emotions, such as fear and discouragement. They need support and encouragement! For individuals in that stage perhaps Dr. Seuss would emphasize something like “today you are YOU, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You." Or perhaps he would say, “you'll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut."
Facing the hard questions and figuring out our calling can be some of the hardest work that we do in life. Allowing ourselves the luxury of working through the process is not easy. As we work our way through this process I bet Dr. Seuss would have guided us by saying "sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple."
Why does all this matter? Well, to add a little onto one of Dr. Seuss’ quotes…"A person's a person, no matter how small”…I guess that’s why I like to help them all…(in all due respect, please note that the last portion is my addition). I have loved having the “calling” of being a career counselor. I am working directly from my heart and soul to help others find their way. Let me try my hand at a counseling rhyme, “teaching the process and guiding it through...but ultimately the final work is always up to you! No, in the end I think Dr. Seuss said it best, “you're on your own…and you know what you know. And you are the one who'll decide where to go!"
