I love to walk! That’s a simple statement that holds a lot of meaning to me. Whether it is a walk around the campus, a neighborhood walk or a hike in the mountains…walking is great! Below are some photos of special people during our walks together. This weekend I went hiking in the mountains with some of my favorite people.
As we hit a steep part of the trail the person in the lead called back, “It’s getting really steep now, just put one foot in front of the other and keep going”… That’s the key to the journey of your life. Sometimes you just have to put one foot in front of the other. As you continue in your journey of life, be sure to soak in all of your surroundings. Slow down…find the moment and stay in the moment.
We are all searching for how to best enhance our journey and lives. As a career counselor and advisor, I help students and clients navigate their journeys every day. My journey is similar to but different than yours. In my role as a college advisor, I meet with numerous students who do not do any introspection but merely look to the world at large for what to do.
It’s good to listen to parents, watch the news and read information but you also have to listen to yourself. That inner voice will guide you. You are a unique and special individual. There is nobody else like you so therefore you need to find some quiet time and explore what has meaning to you. Below is a photo of my final walk with my dear father. As we walked in the gardens near his retirement home he was still exploring, sharing and enjoying the moment!
Do some self-assessments and exploration. Explore the world of work too! Find that “goodness of fit” that helps you connect best to the world. Figure out what gets you excited and how you can best contribute to the world. One of the reasons that I love working with college students is that they have just started their journey in life. It’s hard to know what to do first and where to go…
Skipping ahead is not always a good idea. You might find yourself having to backtrack later because you just launched yourself and did not do a thorough exploration first.
Another population I enjoy working with is anyone seeking to make a career transition. Experienced individuals bring a lot of depth and experience to the process. They have experienced life and are eager to find their next best step. Often some deep grief and negative life or work experiences have brought them in to seek additional help. They need a guide to help illuminate the process and find a new path.
Continue searching…continue learning…continue growing! But most of all, enjoy your journey. One of my favorite quotes is that the journey is the goal!
